Schedule News for 2009-2010

Your child’s schedule reflects the courses he or she selected as well as teacher and parent recommendations. In some cases, students have been assigned to SOL Lab or Independent Reading instead of electives so that they may receive academic support. In other cases, students may be scheduled for alternate electives due to availability of electives.

All students should be assigned to eight periods: English, math, science, social studies, lunch, homeroom, health and physical education, and an elective.
6th and 7th graders’ electives may be for one year, semesters, or quarters. 8th grade electives are for one year or two semesters. AVID students may have an additional course, and 8th graders may have two electives without health and physical education as long as a waiver was completed before May of 2009. Health and physical education for 8th grade will appear as two semester courses for 8th graders.

If in reviewing your child’s schedule, you believe there may be an error, please contact the guidance counselor. If you would like to request a change in your child’s schedule, please submit the request to the counselor in writing. Errors in schedules will take priority over change requests which will be honored when possible.

Academic Planning

As high school graduation requirements are expanded to meet the increasing demands of college admissions and the changing workforce, counselors must communicate with parents to keep them informed and to help them make the best academic choices for their children.

To plan for high school, counselors will be meeting with 8th grade classes beginning in November to discuss diploma options, course offerings, and new graduation requirements. Eighth graders will be provided with a copy of a high school academic plan which parents are encouraged to review with their children and with the counselor.
