Welcome to the Determinators

ATTENTION PARENTS:
Field Trip to Chrysler Hall will be on Friday, November 30.Students will need to dress in appropriate attire for the occasion.  No blue jeans or shorts.  Nice (button down or polo style) shirts and pants for the boys and skirts or nice pants for the girls.

The following is a brief overview of the topics your child will be studying during the 2nd Nine Weeks. Please feel free to e-mail us if you have any questions.   We encourage parental involvement.  Conferences can be scheduled through guidance.

ALGEBRA
Begin talking about linear relationships and then spend the entire second nine weeks dissecting linear equations, including graphing, different forms of linear equations, writing linear equations, applications, and systems of linear equations.

GEOMETRY
Finish deductive reasoning and then begin discussing properties of triangles including congruency theorems, medians, altitudes, and points of concurrency.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Grammar – Verbs, Sentence Types, Comma Usage
Vocabulary – new words about every other week and quizzes after new words have been learned
Writing – Starting the writing process, lots of prewriting and writing strategies!  Students will need to learn and memorize their Writing Charts.

Reading – Nonfiction and a novel unit.  Deathwatch for Core and TBA for Advanced.
CIVICS


In November students will be studying the Constitution of the United States, the amendments, the political process, and voting.  Students will be discussing current events concerning civil rights and politics.

EARTH SCIENCE
Astronomy & Space Science:   Investigating the Sun-Earth Moon System; In-depth study of the characteristics of the Solar System (including the inner vs. outer planets, Earth’s moon, Sun, stars, and Milky Way galaxy)
                                  
Meteorology:  Evolution, Structure and the Composition of the Earth’s Atmosphere; Characteristics of Weather on Earth – including the atmospheric properties and how it interacts and affects our weather on Earth; and Climatic Changes on Earth.

Geology:  Introduction to properties of minerals that make-up common rocks on Earth; Classify the three main types of Rocks:  Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic Rocks.
