Parenting Tips
Our goal is to work together with you to make your child's 6th grade year a successful one! Many students have difficulty adjusting to the transition from elementary school...two of the main culprits are disorganization & keeping up with assignments. We encourage you to notify us if there are additional issues your child is facing. Here are a few helpful tips on what you can do to help your child get (and stay) on the right track:
- Encourage and enforce the use of daily assignment planners! Each student should be writing down class assignments (at the beginning of each bell) in their planner. If they don't write it down, they will forget to do it! Ask them to see their planner and then double check what they've written . . .immediately call the homework infoline if you don't see anything written down for EVERY class!
- When you child finishes his/her homework ask to SEE it! Check it over for errors and comprehension. Each student should be able to pull out and show you all work. . .we do not collect it until the day it's due! Don't fall for the excuses. . ."My teacher has it", "I finished it in class" or "It's in my locker". This usually means work is incomplete. Don't be afraid to march your child back to school and ask him/her to get it out of the locker so that you can check it...the school is open until 5:30-6:00 every night.
- Sort through your child's notebooks, folders and binders on a regular basis...weekends are a good time to do this! Make sure your child has a section in his/her binder for English, Math & Elective classes. In addition, they are required to keep a composition notebook for Social Studies and a 2 pocket pronged folder for Science. Each class has a "Table of Contents" that students are required to copy down...to help them keep their binders/folders organized. Help them to get better organized by training them to stay on top of this. Practice makes perfect.
